Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has affirmed the government’s unwavering support for writers and intellectuals, announcing the printing of 130 cultural titles as part of a dedicated book printing initiative. This was revealed during the inauguration of the 26th edition of the Baghdad International Book Fair held in the capital, Baghdad.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Sudani toured the exhibition halls, visiting several local and Arab publishing houses, including the pavilion of the sisterly State of Qatar. In his speech, the Prime Minister congratulated the launch of the exhibition, highlighting the significant participation from numerous local, Arab, and foreign publishing houses. He emphasized the importance of this event, linking it to the broader political, economic, and cultural activities that Baghdad has hosted over the past three years. He described Baghdad as a cultural and civilizational meeting place, where diverse ideas, opinions, and knowledge converge.

Al-Sudani took the opportunity to welcome Qatar as the guest of honor at the exhibition, particularly during a time of aggression against its sovereignty. He reiterated Iraq’s commitment to stand by Qatar and condemn such aggression. Emphasizing the government’s prioritization of culture, Al-Sudani likened its importance to that of politics, economics, and development. He announced initiatives to support drama, cinema, theater, and creative writing to enhance Iraq’s cultural life.

The Prime Minister stressed the intellectual’s crucial role in defending the state, contributing to national development, and fostering social unity. He elaborated on the Book Printing Support Initiative launched in 2024, which facilitated the production of approximately 130 cultural titles, supporting various literary professions. Additionally, the initiative has provided serviced residential land, postgraduate study positions, and scholarship opportunities for writers and intellectuals. The government also supports annual reading events and festivals across Iraq.

Al-Sudani concluded by underscoring the power of culture as an unmatched voice and effective weapon, advocating for the documentation of current events by intellectuals and writers to serve as historical evidence.
