Amman: Turkey, Syria, and Jordan agreed to enhance cooperation in land, sea, rail, and air transport, including the activation of the historic Hejaz Railway linking Syria and Jordan. According to National Iraqi News Agency, this agreement was reached during the Turkish-Syrian-Jordanian tripartite technical meeting on transport in Amman last night. The meeting saw the participation of Burak Aykan, Director General of Foreign Affairs at the Turkish Ministry of Transport, Syrian Minister of Transport Mohammad Omar Rahhal, and Secretary-General of the Jordanian Ministry of Transport Fares Abu Dayeh. The participants signed a joint memorandum to be submitted to the transport ministers of the three countries. This memorandum outlines proposals to enhance cooperation across various modes of transport, including land, sea, rail, and air transport. It also includes Turkey's commitment to support Syria in restoring the Hejaz Railway, while Jordan will provide technical assistance for the maintenance of Syrian locomot ives. The memorandum further proposes studies to establish a modern railway line connecting Jordan, Syria, and Turkey to global trade networks. Additionally, it aims to strengthen the truck line from the port of Aqaba to Turkey and Eastern Europe through joint cooperation agreements. Burak Aykan highlighted that the meeting marks a significant step toward developing a practical partnership and expanding cooperation in infrastructure and trilateral railway links. Fariz Abu Dayeh emphasized that the meeting is a practical step toward translating good relations into economic and strategic projects. Mohammad Omar Rahhal underscored the importance of activating railway projects and reviving the Hejaz Railway to support trade and development. The Hejaz Railway, a narrow-gauge railway, connects Damascus and Medina. It was established during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II to serve Muslim pilgrims and connect the regions of the Ottoman Empire.
