Iraq’s Commitment to Women’s Empowerment Highlighted at UN General Assembly

New york: Minister of Migration and Displacement, Evan Faiq Jabro, affirmed that the government is continuing to build women’s capacities and enact supportive laws. In Iraq’s speech to the United Nations General Assembly on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the Beijing Conference on Women, Jabro stated that “Iraq is committed to building women’s capacities and enhancing their political, economic, and social participation,” noting that “this represents a strategic choice for building the present and shaping the future.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Jabro highlighted the Iraqi government’s launch of the National Strategy for Women, which emphasizes protection from violence, ensuring equality, and enhancing women’s capacities. A significant milestone is the enactment of the Yazidi Female Survivors Law, acknowledging the harm suffered due to ISIS crimes, aiming to reintegrate survivors into society and support their families.

Jabro further explained that economic initiatives have been adopted to support women by financing small and medium-sized enterprises and granting positive discrimination. Special attention is being given to women in correctional facilities by providing educational opportunities and opening examination centers, along with caring for accompanying children.

The minister also noted efforts to develop the social protection system and the creation of electronic platforms to facilitate application submissions, ensuring women’s dignity. She emphasized the growing trend of women’s participation in the judiciary and public prosecution, enhancing their role in establishing justice.

Despite these advancements, Jabro acknowledged significant challenges faced by Iraqi women, particularly in rural areas and marshlands affected by water scarcity and climate change, leading to family displacement and increased burdens on women. She reiterated Iraq’s determination to confront these challenges in line with national and international commitments.
