New york: Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein confirmed that Iraq is studying steps to open an embassy in the Cypriot capital, Nicosia. A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, Constantinos Kompous, on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly held in New York. During the meeting, they discussed relations between Iraq and Cyprus and ways to strengthen them. Fuad Hussein confirmed that Iraq is studying steps to open an embassy in the capital, Nicosia, pointing to the significant security improvement witnessed in Iraq and the fact that many countries have lifted or reduced travel warnings to the country, which reflects the international community’s confidence in the stability achieved in the country.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the minister stressed the importance of completing the signing of memoranda of understanding between the two countries in the fields of education and culture, in addition to raising entry visa requirements for holders of diplomatic passports, which would contribute to expanding the horizons of joint cooperation. In this context, he extended an official invitation to the Cypriot Foreign Minister to visit Iraq.
In another context, the two sides discussed current regional and international developments and tensions in the region, stressing the need to intensify efforts to achieve stability. The meeting also addressed issues related to Syria and Iran, and international efforts to end the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
