New york: Iraq, represented by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein, presided over the 49th Ministerial Meeting of the Group of 77 and China in New York. This gathering took place on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly and saw participation from a wide array of ministers and representatives from member states. The event was further marked by the presence of Annalena Baerbock, President of the 80th General Assembly, and UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Hussein, in his address, welcomed the participants and conveyed Iraq's pride in chairing the group's meetings in 2025. He emphasized the need for collective action and coordination among member states, particularly during this critical juncture in the international system's history. This year's meeting was held under the theme: 'Collective Action for Sustainable Development: Advancing the Priorities of the Global South.' Hussein stressed the necessity of solidarity and joint efforts to tackle global challenges such as climate change, economic and financial crises, and social inequality.

The minister also pointed out the group's accomplishments over the past year, notably the adoption of a new Financing for Development document. This document offers a practical framework aimed at addressing debt burdens and reforming the global financial structure to benefit developing countries. He reiterated Iraq's support for the future chair of the group and highlighted the significance of multilateralism and South-South cooperation in achieving sustainable development and international justice.

Annalena Baerbock acknowledged the group as the largest negotiating bloc within the UN, representing the developing countries' voice. Meanwhile, Amina Mohammed congratulated Iraq on its leadership role, emphasizing the importance of sustainable development, financial structure reforms, and the shift towards renewable energy to ensure a more sustainable future.
