Baghdad: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced his intention to hold presidential and legislative elections within one year of the end of the war, noting that specialized bodies have been tasked with drafting an interim constitution for the state within three months.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Abbas called on all national forces and institutions to assume their responsibilities at this critical stage, stressing that the Palestinian people are steadfastly moving toward achieving their freedom and independence and establishing their fully sovereign state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

In an official statement, Abbas affirmed the Palestinian leadership's commitment to a roadmap for comprehensive reform and development, including rebuilding state institutions and enshrining the principles of the rule of law and national unity. He noted that these steps are in line with the Palestinian leadership's pledges during the International Peace Conference in New York.

Abbas announced his intention to hold general presidential and legislative elections within one year of the end of the war. He explained that the competent authorities have been tasked with drafting an interim constitution for the state within three months and amending relevant laws to ensure adherence to international legitimacy and the principles of the two-state solution.

The Palestinian President emphasized that candidacy for the elections will be conditional upon adherence to the political program of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), the Arab Peace Initiative, the existence of a single security authority, and a unified legal system.

He also announced the government's directive to develop educational curricula in line with UNESCO standards, affirming Palestine's commitment to rejecting violence and incitement and promoting a culture of peace in education, media, and culture.

In the social aspect, Abbas indicated the commencement of implementation of Law No. (4) of 2025 regulating allocations for families of martyrs, prisoners, and the wounded. This will be achieved through the establishment of the "Palestinian National Institution for Economic Empowerment" and the implementation of a unified system for social protection and care in accordance with international standards. He emphasized that benefiting from this system is conditional upon completing a unified form and carefully following the implementation instructions.
