New york: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today, Tuesday, that Iraq has won membership in the UN Human Rights Council for the term from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2028.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Ministry stated that Iraq achieved a new diplomatic accomplishment by securing a seat in the United Nations Human Rights Council during the elections held by the United Nations General Assembly at its headquarters in New York yesterday. Iraq's victory was solidified by receiving 175 votes out of 193 member states, reflecting the international community's confidence in Iraq's democratic path and its commitment to human rights, the rule of law, and pluralism.

The Ministry highlighted that Iraq was elected as part of the Asia-Pacific Group, alongside India, Pakistan, and Vietnam. The four nations will represent the group in the next session. This election is seen as a culmination of Iraq's ongoing diplomatic efforts to enhance its regional and international standing, consolidate its active presence in UN forums, and support dialogue, mutual understanding, the culture of human rights, and international cooperation.

The Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations, Ambassador Luqman Alfaili, affirmed following the announcement of the results that Iraq will focus on promoting constructive dialogue, activating multilateral cooperation, and presenting initiatives centered on respect for human dignity, empowering vulnerable groups, and supporting the principles of justice and equality. This approach aligns with the UN Charter and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The statement further explained that this victory represents a significant milestone in Iraq's diplomatic journey and clearly indicates its constructive role in strengthening the human rights system regionally and globally.
