Baghdad: Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein emphasized the significance of maintaining a constructive dialogue between Iraq and Switzerland during his recent meeting with Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations and cooperation in political and economic sectors, alongside addressing regional and international issues of mutual interest.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement highlighting the discussions aimed at developing cooperation mechanisms to serve mutual interests and bolster regional security and stability. During a joint press conference, Fuad Hussein mentioned the exploration of collaboration in water resources management, leveraging Switzerland's expertise in organizing major international meetings in this field.

Additional discussions included potential cooperation between Swiss and Iraqi companies, and preparations for a double taxation avoidance agreement. The meeting also touched on immigration issues, with progress being noted in discussions with the European Union and other countries.

Fuad Hussein expressed satisfaction with Switzerland's decision to grant entry visas to Iraqis via its embassy in Baghdad and mentioned the consideration of a visa waiver for diplomatic passport holders. He welcomed the Swiss Parliamentary President's visit as a sign of ongoing progress in bilateral relations.

On his part, Ignazio Cassis praised Iraq's urban development and the robust bilateral partnership. He noted the reopening of the Swiss Embassy in Baghdad after thirty years as a testament to the enduring relationship. Cassis also expressed Switzerland's intent to enhance cooperation with Iraq across various sectors, appreciating Iraq's regional role and efforts in creating a favorable business environment.

Cassis further announced that visas for Iraqi citizens will now be issued directly through the Swiss Embassy in Baghdad, facilitating easier access by eliminating the need for transit through Jordan. He highlighted a 9% increase in trade between the two countries compared to the previous year, reiterating Switzerland's belief in Iraq's pivotal role in regional stability and its promising future prospects.
