Kirkuk: The Kirkuk Center for Dialogue and Strategic Studies held a symposium titled ‘The Water Crisis in Iraq: Challenges and Opportunities,’ featuring Dr. Torhan al-Mufti, Advisor to the Prime Minister for Water Affairs. Moderated by academic Mustafa al-Mukhtar, the event included a diverse group of political, social, and academic participants.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Center President Hassan Turan opened the symposium by emphasizing the importance of addressing national issues like the water crisis, which he described as a vital challenge that requires both governmental and societal collaboration. Turan advocated for enhanced water diplomacy and constructive dialogue with neighboring countries to secure Iraq’s water rights.

Dr. Torhan al-Mufti provided an analytical overview, identifying the water crisis as a strategic issue tied to national security, food security, and sustainable development. He highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach and coordinated national efforts to tackle the crisis.

The symposium participants engaged in extensive discussions on both international and domestic aspects of the water crisis, Iraq’s rights under existing water agreements, and interventions to address water scarcity. They explored potential solutions to the crisis, emphasizing the importance of sustainable water resource management.

The event concluded with a collective call for the establishment of a ‘Supreme Water Council.’ This proposed national authority would be responsible for developing a comprehensive strategy for the management and sustainability of Iraq’s water resources for future generations.
