Brussels: The European Union announced its intention to lift the sanctions imposed on Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, aligning with a recent decision adopted by the United Nations Security Council. The move marks a significant shift in international policy towards Syria.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, European Commission spokesperson Eva Hernserova stated that the EU plans to remove the Syrian President’s name from the sanctions list as soon as possible. This decision is part of international coordination efforts regarding the Syrian situation.

The EU’s announcement follows the United Kingdom’s decision to lift its sanctions on Al-Sharaa after the UN Security Council voted in favor of a U.S.-sponsored resolution. This resolution also delists Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab from international sanctions. The resolution received support from 14 members of the council, with China choosing to abstain from the vote.
