Washington: The White House announced that US President Donald Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman signed a joint strategic defense agreement. According to National Iraqi News Agency, the White House stated in a press release that "a series of agreements were signed with the Saudi Crown Prince and President Trump, which deepen the strategic partnership between the United States and Saudi Arabia, expand opportunities for high-wage American jobs, strengthen vital supply chains, and enhance regional stability." It added: "These agreements follow the President's visit to Riyadh in May and the $600 billion in Saudi investment commitments that the United States received at that time. In a significant expansion of this partnership, the Crown Prince announced that Saudi Arabia will increase its investment commitments in the United States to nearly $1 trillion." The White House explained that "President Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman signed the Strategic Defense Agreement between the United States and Saudi Arabia, a historic agreement that strengthens the defense partnership that has lasted for more than 80 years and enhances deterrence throughout the Middle East." It noted that "the Strategic Defense Agreement represents a victory for the America First agenda. It makes it easier for American defense companies to operate in Saudi Arabia, secures new burden-sharing funds from Saudi Arabia to offset American costs, and reaffirms that the Kingdom views the United States as its primary strategic partner." The White House confirmed that "President Trump approved a major defense sales package, including future deliveries of F-35 fighter jets. The President also secured an agreement allowing Saudi Arabia to purchase nearly 300 American tanks, enabling the Kingdom to build its own defense capabilities." The White House highlighted that key achievements included a civil nuclear cooperation agreement, progress in cooperation on critical minerals, and a memorandum of understanding on artificial intelligence. It noted that "these agreements demonstrate the Trump administration's 'America First' approach, which strengthens the United States' position as a leader on the world stage while securing its economic future." The United States and Saudi Arabia agreed to "intensify their cooperation in the coming weeks on trade issues of mutual interest, including areas related to reducing non-tariff barriers, recognizing standards, and improving the investment environment." The U.S. Treasury Department and the Saudi Ministry of Finance also signed "agreements to enhance cooperation in capital market technology, standards, and regulations, and to deepen partnerships in international financial institutions." These agreements follow the arrival of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the United States and his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, marking his first official visit to the United States since 2018. He was received by a number of senior U.S. officials, including Vice President JD Vance, S ecretary of State Marco Rubio, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bisent.
