Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani and Kurdistan Region’s Prime Minister, Masrour Barzani, have announced the formation of a joint investigation committee aimed at uncovering those responsible for the recent attack on the Kormor gas field located in Sulaymaniyah Governorate.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Barzani received a phone call from Al-Sudani during which the Prime Minister condemned the attack, labeling it as an assault on Iraq and its valuable energy resources. The leaders agreed on the necessity of expediting the committee’s investigation to swiftly identify, apprehend, and prosecute the perpetrators.
In a related statement, the Joint Operations Command asserted that the individuals behind the attack would be subjected to strict legal consequences, describing the incident as a ‘cowardly and treacherous act.’ The command highlighted the negative impact on the electricity system, notably affecting Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, and causing direct harm to the country’s energy infrastructure.
The attack on the Kormor gas field involved an explosive-laden drone, which resulted in a significant explosion and fire. This incident led to a halt in the gas supply to power plants in the Kurdistan Region, further exacerbating the energy situation.
