Washington: The United States has announced its approval of an $11.1 billion arms sale to Taiwan, marking the largest arms package ever sold to the Chinese island. The decision underscores the US commitment to supporting Taiwan amidst rising tensions in the region.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) released a statement emphasizing that the arms deal aligns with US national, economic, and security interests. It aims to aid Taiwan in modernizing its armed forces and maintaining "reliable defense capabilities."

Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense disclosed that the arms package includes eight categories of weapons such as HIMARS missile systems, howitzers, Javelin anti-tank missiles, and Altius armed drones, along with spare parts for other military equipment. The Ministry highlighted the importance of these weapons in sustaining peace and stability in the region. The deal is currently in the notification phase for Congress, which retains the authority to reject or alter the agreement. Despite this, Taiwan benefits from strong bipartisan support in the US Congress.

Karen Ko, Spokesperson for the Taiwanese Presidential Office, expressed gratitude towards the US support, stating that Taiwan is committed to defense reforms and enhancing societal defense resilience. She emphasized Taiwan's determination to safeguard peace through strength.

In contrast, the Chinese Foreign Ministry reacted with anger, asserting that the arms sale undermines peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The Ministry demanded an end to such transactions, warning that US actions intended to support Taiwan's independence would ultimately be counterproductive. China regards Taiwan as part of its territory and opposes any Western involvement in its affairs, viewing the matter as an internal issue.
