Barham Salih: My Experience in Refugee Affairs Will Guide My Work

New york: UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih affirmed that his experience in refugee affairs will guide his work. In a statement following his election to his new position at the United Nations on Thursday, Salih said, "I am honored to be elected to the position of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. As a former refugee myself, I have witnessed firsthand how protection and opportunity can transform a person's life."

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Salih emphasized that his personal journey will inform his leadership approach at the United Nations. He stated, "This experience will guide my approach to leading this prestigious institution, an approach based on empathy, realism, and a principled commitment to international law." Salih noted that his primary responsibility will be to refugees and those forced to flee their homes, focusing on safeguarding their rights and dignity.

Salih also highlighted his commitment to pushing for sustainable solutions to ensure that displacement is a temporary situation and not a permanent fate. As he takes on this role, Salih's background and personal experiences are expected to shape the strategies and policies of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
