Baghdad: Legal expert and consultant Salem Hawas highlighted that normalization with the Zionist entity is explicitly criminalized under Iraq's Law No. (1) of 2022, which was enacted on May 26, 2022. He pointed out that the law unequivocally prohibits any form of communication, promotion, or cooperation-whether direct or indirect-with the Zionist entity, categorizing it as an act of treason that endangers Iraq's security and sovereignty.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Hawas outlined that the law stipulates the most severe penalties as per the penal code, including the death penalty or life imprisonment, especially in cases involving promotion or advocacy. He also referenced Article (201) of the amended Penal Code No. 111 of 1969, which criminalizes the promotion of Zionism, asserting that these legal provisions are active and must be uniformly enforced against all individuals and officials.
Hawas expressed concern over any official silence or executive negligence, labeling it a severe breach of constitutional duty. He urged the relevant authorities to initiate legal proceedings impartially, free from political influence. He further clarified that the law is intended for active implementation, warning that any official who undermines its application or hinders justice will be held accountable. He emphasized that perpetrators of this crime are not eligible for any form of amnesty, whether general or special.
