Baghdad: Head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, affirmed that he will readily accept any decision made by the Coordination Framework regarding his continued candidacy for the position of Prime Minister.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, in a televised interview, al-Maliki stated, “I came as a candidate through the constitutional and legal channels, not through the back door, and the Coordination Framework has the right to proceed to the end.” He added, “I will proceed to the end, but I will abide by any decision of the Framework to withdraw my candidacy should any unforeseen circumstances arise.” He stressed that “concessions under the current circumstances pose a significant danger to Iraq.”
The former Prime Minister affirmed that “the concerns raised by some parties are unfounded. We are seeking dialogue with everyone to dispel these fears, and we want to leverage our relationship with the factions to reach a disarmament solution.”
Regarding US President Donald Trump’s tweet, Maliki said, “Trump was misled about his tweet against me. Three countries-Qatar, Turkey, and Syria-submitted reports about me to him. He might retract his statement if he realizes they misled him.” He continued, “The US Charg© d’Affaires did not ask me to withdraw, and we are keen to continue working with the American side.”
