PM Directs Security Forces to Confront and Counter Any Actions That Threaten Security and Stability in Light of Developments in the Region

Baghdad: Prime Minister, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, has directed security agencies to take firm measures to confront any actions that could undermine security and stability, amid rapidly evolving regional developments.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Sudani chaired an extraordinary meeting of the Ministerial Council for National Security on Monday, during which the overall situation in the country was reviewed in light of recent developments and the serious security escalation in the region.

The Commander-in-Chief reiterated his directives to security forces to counter any attempts to destabilize internal security and to prevent any party from dragging Iraq into ongoing conflicts.

The Council stressed that while the state guarantees freedom of expression, the right to peaceful assembly, and the protection of citizens’ rights as constitutionally and legally enshrined principles, the government remains committed to preventing any targeting of diplomatic missions or vital facilities. Security forces will continue to fulfill their duties in protecting citizens, diplomatic missions, and public and private property, while enforcing national laws in line with Iraq’s international obligations.

The Council further reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to preventing escalation and ensuring that its territory is not used for any external or internal conflicts, emphasizing that decisions related to national security, peace, and military movements fall exclusively within the authority of the state through its constitutional institutions.

The meeting also addressed potential economic risks stemming from the continuation and expansion of military operations in the region. The Ministers of Oil (also acting Minister of Electricity) and Trade were hosted to provide a comprehensive briefing on fuel and energy production, as well as food security, and to discuss necessary measures to mitigate the impact of regional developments on Iraq and the broader region.
