Ankara: US President Donald Trump announced that the decision to sell F-35 fighter jets to Turkey will be made, and that relations with Ankara are better than ever. During his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, Trump stated, “I have no concerns of any kind regarding Turkey acquiring F-35 fighter jets.”
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Trump emphasized Turkey’s role as a loyal partner and expressed confidence in the country’s intentions. He described the F-35 as “a fantastic aircraft, the best, by far, at the moment,” suggesting it as a viable option for Turkey. Trump also highlighted Turkey’s non-involvement in conflicts with Iran and its stance against Iran’s nuclear ambitions, attributing these positions to his administration’s influence.
The meeting with Erdogan was portrayed as a strengthening factor for US-Turkey relations. Trump expressed respect for Erdogan’s leadership and acknowledged Turkey’s growing military power. He also hinted at the possibility of lifting sanctions imposed on Turkey under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).
Trump discussed NATO investments, expressing his frustrations but also indicating the strategic importance of Turkey’s role. He remarked that his participation in a NATO summit hinged largely on Erdogan’s leadership.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in turn, announced that Turkey had received a promise to purchase five F-35 fighter jets, marking a significant development in the defense relationship between the two countries.
