Baghdad: Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi engaged in discussions with Kristalina Georgieva, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and her delegation in Washington, D.C., addressing the state of Iraq’s economy and pathways for mutual cooperation.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the discussions focused on the current dynamics of the Iraqi economy, with an emphasis on collaboration between Iraq and the IMF. They explored necessary economic and financial policies and reforms aimed at fostering genuine economic growth, diversifying income sources, and reducing Iraq’s dependence on oil revenues. Prime Minister al-Zaidi highlighted the significance of the relationship with the IMF and outlined the government’s ongoing implementation of measures targeting financial and administrative corruption, along with economic, financial, and administrative reforms. These efforts are designed to establish a diversified, sustainable national economy by supporting the private sector, improving the investment climate, and addressing payment balance disparities.

Kristalina Georgieva commended the Iraqi government’s reform initiatives, especially in combating corruption and advancing economic reform. She assured that the IMF is prepared to offer technical support and guidance to Iraq. This support aims to help Iraq develop a comprehensive economic reform framework, set priorities for upcoming phases, and empower the private sector to significantly contribute to economic development and achieve targeted economic growth.
