Busan: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced the addition of 25 new sites to the World Heritage List, following the conclusion of the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea. This session marked a significant milestone as it was the first time sites from the Comoros, So Tom© and Prncipe, and South Sudan were inscribed.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the decisions to inscribe these new sites were made by consensus, highlighting the collaborative spirit enshrined in the 1972 World Heritage Convention. The session also addressed concerns for certain sites, adding six to the List of World Heritage in Danger. This brings the total number of inscribed sites to 1,273 across 173 countries.
In a notable highlight from the session, the Wadi Wurayah Nature Reserve in the Emirate of Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This recognition underscores the reserve's global importance and its status as a key environmental site among natural heritage locations worldwide.
