Baghdad: The head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Faiq Zaidan, affirmed on Tuesday that there is no legal basis for settlement agreements with those accused in corruption cases. The Secretary of the Communist Party, Raed Fahmi, quoted Judge Faiq Zaidan as saying during a meeting with representatives of the Civil Current that “there is no legal basis for settlement agreements with those accused in corruption cases.”

According to Iraqi News Agency, Judge Zaidan added that the judiciary deals with corruption cases according to the law, and there is no decision or intention to adopt settlements with corrupt individuals, emphasizing that “the judiciary proceeds in dealing with corruption cases according to the established legal frameworks.”

He explained that freedoms are a constitutionally guaranteed right, and the judiciary distinguishes between exercising the right to expression and cases of slander, defamation, and transgression. He noted that “the judiciary’s role is to apply the law, not to legislate it, as legislation is the prerogative of the Council of Representatives.”
