Basra: A medical team at Al-Shifa General Hospital in Basra has successfully saved the life of a 13-year-old girl by performing a complex surgical procedure to remove a rare fibroid tumor known as a “desmoid tumor.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Basra Health Department’s media office reported that the surgery took two hours of intensive, focused work. The operation was led by consultant Dr. Sarmad Maneh Habash, who ensured the complete removal of the tumor with precision, preserving the surrounding vital tissues without any collateral damage.

The medical department explained that although the tumor is benign and non-cancerous, it is characterized by localized growth intertwined with connective tissue. This necessitated comprehensive pre-planning and the application of advanced surgical techniques to ensure complete removal and minimize the possibility of recurrence.

The patient is currently under continuous medical observation and receiving phased care in the general surgery ward. Doctors have confirmed that her health is completely stable, and she is recovering well. This positive progress is expected to lead to her discharge soon, allowing her to return home and resume her normal life.
