Baghdad: The Ministry of Youth and Sports took part in the 62nd meeting of the National Commission for UNESCO, which was chaired by the Minister of Education and Head of the Iraqi National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science, Abdul Karim Abtan al-Jubouri. This meeting included representatives from different ministries and relevant bodies to deliberate on several agenda topics.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Hussam Hassan, Director General of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation and a member of the National Commission for UNESCO, represented the Ministry at the meeting. He highlighted key issues discussed, such as Iraq’s bid to chair the UNESCO General Conference during its 2029 session and its aspiration for membership on the organization’s Executive Board for the 2027-2031 period. Additionally, there was a proposal for an Iraqi city to be nominated as the World Book Capital for 2027.
Furthermore, the meeting addressed UNESCO’s strategy for the years 2026-2029, along with initiatives like the Baghdad Capital of the Arab Child and the Baghdad Capital of Culture in the Islamic World for 2026.
