Baghdad: The Ministry of Migration and Displacement has announced that the process concerning the al-Hol refugee camp is nearing completion, with the majority of its detainees repatriated to their home countries.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Deputy Minister of Migration and Displacement, Karim al-Nouri, detailed that the al-Hol camp, which once housed over 60,000 individuals from multiple nationalities, has seen a significant reduction in its population. Initially, some European nations hesitated in repatriating their citizens due to concerns of potential threats. However, following Iraq’s decisive action to close the camp and return residents, many European countries have now complied and taken back their nationals.
Al-Nouri revealed that the number of foreign nationals remaining in the camp is minimal, with approximately 1,200 Iraqis still present. He emphasized that these developments indicate that the al-Hol camp file is almost entirely resolved.
The Ministry’s Undersecretary further confirmed that over 20,000 Iraqis have already departed the camp and returned to their home regions without any reported security incidents. Those still requiring attention are being accommodated at the Al-Amal Center for Psychological Rehabilitation in the Al-Jada’a camp, located in Nineveh Governorate. The ongoing efforts focus on their reintegration into society, with positive responses observed from the individuals involved.
