13 Tunisians Missing After Migrant Boat Sinks Off Coast

Tunis: The head of the Tunisian Observatory for Human Rights, Mustafa Abdel Kabir, reported that at least 13 Tunisians are missing following the sinking of a migrant boat off the Tunisian coast. The vessel was attempting the perilous journey to Italy when the tragedy occurred.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, rescue teams have successfully saved two individuals, though one remains in critical condition. The boat embarked on its ill-fated voyage at dawn on Thursday. Survivors recounted their harrowing experience, revealing they were stranded at sea for hours after the boat capsized.

Tunisia has long been a primary departure point for migrants aiming to cross the Mediterranean to Europe. However, efforts to curb such departures have intensified in recent years. The Tunisian authorities, bolstered by European funding and surveillance equipment, have increased their crackdown on migration and enhanced maritime border controls.

A joint statement by Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and numerous other organizations last month criticized the migration agreement between the European Union and Tunisia. They argued that the pact has worsened serious violations against migrants and asylum seekers in Tunisia.
