Baghdad: The Ministry of Education announced on Monday the submission of Iraq’s file for the presidency of the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the first time in its history.

According to Iraqi News Agency, the Ministry’s official spokesperson, Karim Al-Sayyid, stated that the Iraqi National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, led by the Minister of Education, is working on several significant projects. Through the Department of Cultural Relations and with the involvement of relevant ministries and entities, Iraq is pursuing initiatives that aim to enhance its presence in international organizations and cultural events.

One of the key initiatives includes submitting Iraq’s candidacy for the presidency of the UNESCO General Conference. Additionally, Iraq seeks to renew its membership in the UNESCO Executive Board, a position it first secured in 2023. These steps are part of Iraq’s broader strategy to bolster its role on the global stage.

Furthermore, the Ministry is preparing for the event marking Baghdad’s selection as the Arab Child Capital in its inaugural edition, an initiative initially proposed by Iraq. The country is also working on nominating Baghdad as the Capital of Culture in the Islamic World and Najaf as the World Book Capital. These projects are designed to promote Iraq’s cultural and educational influence both regionally and globally.
