Baghdad: Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein met with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy on Monday to discuss ways to enhance cooperation and coordination within the framework of the Arab League, as well as current developments in the region and the potential repercussions of disruptions to maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Iraqi News Agency, a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein met with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy at the League’s headquarters in Cairo, on the sidelines of the 166th regular session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level. The meeting was also attended by the Iraqi Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Qahtan Taha Khalaf, and the Head of the Arab Affairs Department, Ambassador Osama Mahdi Ghanem.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Foreign Minister congratulated the Secretary-General on assuming his duties, wishing him success in fulfilling his new responsibilities, which will contribute to strengthening the role of the Arab League in confronting the challenges facing the region.

During the meeting, ways to enhance cooperation and coordination within the framework of the League of Arab States were discussed, along with current developments in the region, the ongoing tension between Tehran and Washington, and the repercussions of the escalation on the security and stability of the region.

The meeting also addressed the potential repercussions of disruptions to maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and its impact on the economies of Arab countries, particularly Iraq, given the strait’s strategic importance to global trade and energy supplies.

According to the statement, Hussein emphasized the importance of opening channels for dialogue and communication between the concerned parties and working to create the appropriate conditions for reaching understandings that contribute to reducing tensions and preventing the conflict from escalating. He pointed to the urgent need for communication channels and a liaison to help bridge viewpoints and support diplomatic efforts.

He noted the possibility of the League of Arab States playing a positive role in this context by utilizing its relationships and contacts and supporting efforts aimed at promoting dialogue and achieving stability in the region.

For his part, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States stressed the importance of adopting quiet diplomacy and dialogue in addressing crises, expressing his openness and readiness to play a positive role that contributes to supporting efforts to reduce tension and enhance regional security and stability.
