Abu dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre is set to host an evening event titled “You Forgot Us, Our Loved Ones” this coming Saturday, in remembrance of the late Emirati singer Jaber Jassim. This event is a part of the cultural festivities leading up to the 35th Abu Dhabi International Book Fair and aims to celebrate the contributions of Jassim to Emirati music and the broader Arab artistic landscape.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the event will coincide with the 25th anniversary of Jassim’s passing and will take place at the Cultural Foundation Theatre in Abu Dhabi. It promises an artistic experience beyond a traditional concert, incorporating live music with visual storytelling, archival materials, and short films. This contemporary approach aims to highlight pivotal moments in Jassim’s career, introducing his artistic legacy to newer generations through a blend of authenticity and modernity.

Upon arrival at the Cultural Complex, attendees will be transported back to the 1970s and 80s through evocative designs and visual elements. The event will feature interactive spaces for audience engagement, making it a comprehensive experience that goes beyond the confines of a theatrical performance.

On stage, a fusion of music and visual storytelling will explore Jassim’s life and legacy. The program will include two short films: the first detailing Jassim’s early career, his pursuit of poems and melodies, and the development of his vocal style; the second chronicling his experiences in Cairo and the evolution of his music.

Additionally, a new song inspired by Jassim’s musical spirit will be performed in classical Arabic, showcasing a contemporary artistic vision that maintains the unique essence of his legacy. This highlights the importance of reviving artistic memory not just as documentation but as a means to reinterpret heritage for new generations.

Saeed Hamdan Al Tunaiji, Executive Director of the Centre and Director of the Exhibition, remarked on Jassim’s enduring influence, stating, “The late artist Jaber Jassim cemented his place in the memory and conscience of Emirati, Gulf, and Arab society through his creative works that immortalized his artistic career and made him one of the most prominent names in the artistic and musical scene.” Al Tunaiji emphasized Jassim’s unique ability to blend Emirati identity with Arabic poetry, creating music that resonated deeply within the societal memory.
