Parliamentary Committee Urges Merit-Based Selection for Defense and Interior Ministers

Baghdad: The Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee has made a strong appeal to Al-Zaydi, urging the selection of professional military figures for the critical roles of Ministers of Defense and Interior, devoid of political influence.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Yasser Iskandar Watout, a significant member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee and affiliated with the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, revealed the absence of a finalized agreement concerning the candidates for these ministerial positions. Watout emphasized that no date has been set for presenting the remaining cabinet positions. Additionally, the decision regarding deputy prime ministers and their occupancy of positions is contingent upon the consensus of the Coordination Framework and the State Administration Coalition.

Watout further disclosed that several candidates have been proposed by political blocs for the Ministries of Defense and Interior, with their names forwarded to the Prime Minister. Notable candidates include Lieutenant General Qasim Atta and Lieutenant General Uday Samir for Interior Minister, and former Minister Jumaa Anad alongside Talal Hussein Jaro, the Director General of Personnel at the Ministry of Defense, for Defense Minister. He stressed the importance of selecting individuals based on professional merit, free from political pressures, to ensure the stability of Iraqi security, particularly in light of the anticipated withdrawal of international coalition forces in September.
