Water Resources Minister Initiates Preparations for Winter Flood and Drought Challenges


Baghdad: Minister of Water Resources, Muthanna al-Tamimi, has directed heightened readiness and early preparations for the impending winter season, focusing on addressing flood and drought risks. Emphasizing the importance of efficient water resource management, the minister called for strengthened control over water systems.



According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Ministry revealed in a press release that Minister al-Tamimi chaired a Central Flood and Drought Operations Room meeting. This gathering included senior officials from the ministry and staff from Baghdad and various provinces. Key topics discussed were the current water situation and strategic reserves, including the status of the Tigris and Euphrates basins and their tributaries. The meeting involved a comparison of current water inflows and reserves against those of the previous year, evaluation of rainfall forecasts, and strategies for securing water for the marshes for the 2025-2026 water year. Additionally, the removal of encroachments and obstacles affecting river flow within Baghdad and the provinces was addressed. The meeting also covered the follow-up on legal cases against violators and the provision of logistical and mechanical support. Directives were issued for preparing a proactive plan to enhance mechanical efforts, overcome obstacles in dredging and
clearing rivers, and secure fuel amidst limited financial resources.



The statement further noted that the Minister praised the staff’s efforts, which led to the Ministry achieving second place in the evaluation of the first 100 days of government work. He underscored the importance of ongoing coordination with other ministries and oversight bodies to ensure the water needs of various sectors are met.
