Essaouira: Hundreds of farmers in the Al-Suwaira district, located north of Wasit Governorate, staged a demonstration today to express their grievances over the ongoing water shortage in the Al-Khajiyah irrigation project. This critical infrastructure is responsible for supplying water to approximately 250,000 dunams of agricultural land, which is now under threat due to the scarcity.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, several farmers voiced their concerns, stating that the Al-Khajiyah project has been experiencing a continuous water shortage for about five years. This prolonged issue has led to significant damage to agricultural lands and crops, with a ripple effect that is also impacting the availability of drinking water supplies.
The protesting farmers have urged the Ministry of Water Resources to implement urgent solutions to ensure that water is consistently available for the project, highlighting the critical need for government intervention to secure their livelihoods and the region’s agricultural output.
