Amarah: Maysan University is exploring the possibility of establishing a university education center in Amarah Central Prison. Maysan University announced on Tuesday that it has begun studying the feasibility of establishing a university education center at Amarah Central Prison, which would allow inmates and detainees to pursue their university studies in various scientific disciplines.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the initiative is part of a joint cooperation between the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Ministry of Justice. It aims to enhance the reformative and rehabilitative role of education. A statement from the university indicated that practical steps have been initiated to assess the feasibility of the project. A university committee has visited Amarah Central Prison to evaluate the current situation, study the requirements, and explore procedures necessary for establishing the center.

The head of the committee, Mohammed Majid Mohammed Saleh, noted that the study covers academic, technical, and administrative aspects. He emphasized the importance of university education within correctional institutions as a means to rehabilitate inmates, equipping them with knowledge and skills for societal reintegration post-release. This initiative reflects a vision that education is a tool for reform, balancing the inmate’s right to education with societal protection, and providing an environment that mitigates the negative impacts of detention.

Haitham Jabr, the representative of the Minister of Justice and Director of Amarah Central Prison, praised the initiative and expressed gratitude to Maysan University for its efforts. He stated that the project represents a significant advancement in inmate education, ensuring the continuity of the educational process within the correctional setting.
