Tunis:The High Commission for Human Rights has declared that eradicating poverty is a humanitarian obligation rather than an option.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Commission issued a statement on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, emphasizing that this observance is a call to action for humanity. It serves as an alarm for the world to uphold human rights and preserve human dignity, renewing the commitment to build societies characterized by justice, equality, and equal opportunity. The statement highlighted that poverty is more than just a lack of financial resources; it represents a deprivation of fundamental rights and a barrier to individuals’ participation in societal development.
The Commission expressed concern over the humanitarian and social impacts of rising poverty levels, noting that millions face severe difficulties in accessing basic necessities, such as housing, clean water, electricity, education, healthcare, and employment. It stressed that combating poverty is a shared responsibility requiring collective efforts from government and society, including state institutions, the private sector, and civil society organizations. These groups are urged to launch sustainable initiatives targeting vulnerable populations and providing opportunities for economic and social empowerment.
The High Commission for Human Rights urged authorities to adopt practical programs based on human rights principles, enhance social protection networks, and ensure equitable access to essential services. It also called for the monitoring of plans and policies, evaluating their impact, and turning anti-poverty initiatives into successful stories of sustainable development. The eradication of poverty, as stated by the Commission, is not only a humanitarian, legal, and moral obligation but also a true measure of a state’s respect for human dignity and rights.
