New York:Pakistan has urged the United Nations to implement more effective measures against cross-border terrorism while holding accountable the entities that fund and arm militant groups. The call was made on Thursday, emphasizing the need to prevent the misuse of counter-terrorism as a justification for extrajudicial actions beyond national borders or for infringing on state sovereignty.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Muhammad Jawad Ajmal, an advisor to the Pakistani mission to the United Nations, highlighted the severe toll that terrorism has taken on Pakistan, with more than 4,700 casualties reported over the past three years. He underscored the importance of dismantling militant networks that pose threats to countries neighboring Afghanistan.
Ajmal also pointed out the necessity of differentiating between acts of terrorism and the legitimate struggle for self-determination by peoples under occupation. He called for adherence to international law and the protection of human rights within counter-terrorism operations.
