Baghdad: The security advisor to the Prime Minister, Qasim al-Araji, emphasized that Iraq has navigated complex phases, exceptional circumstances, and flawed policies since 2003. In a press interview with Al-Mayadeen TV, al-Araji mentioned that the date set for the withdrawal of coalition forces from Iraq is September 30, 2026, highlighting that the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) law remains an internal Iraqi issue, independent of foreign government influence.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, al-Araji warned against any failure by the international coalition and American forces to withdraw, while also valuing Iraq’s relations with Iran. He acknowledged Iran’s support during the opposition era and after 2003, clarifying that Iraq maintains independence and is not subservient to Tehran. Al-Araji stressed that the PMF is an independent Iraqi force, not a replication of any foreign model, and serves as a critical component of the nation’s security framework.
He discussed the origins of ISIS, describing it as a “homegrown creation with external support,” with various enemies of Iraq’s political system supporting these groups. Al-Araji noted that the PMF was established during exceptional circumstances and recognized as an official institution by the Council of Representatives in 2016.
Furthermore, he stated that drones and ballistic missiles currently held by factions would be transferred to state authority for the defense of Iraq, under the guidance of a government decision and the authority of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
