Baghdad: The Ministry of Migration and Displacement announced the imminent closure of al-Hol camp, confirming the rehabilitation of 21,000 returnees without any security breaches.

According to Iraqi News Agency, Karim al-Nouri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Migration and Displacement, stated that al-Hol camp in northeastern Syria was a ticking time bomb that could potentially explode at any moment. He highlighted Iraq’s success in dismantling the camp, noting that only a small number of displaced Iraqis, approximately 1,200, remain.

Al-Nouri emphasized that 21,000 individuals have been returned to their areas of origin without any security incidents, showcasing the success of their social and psychological rehabilitation efforts. He assured that the al-Hol camp file would be completely closed soon.

In September 2025, an international conference was convened at the United Nations headquarters, facilitated by intensive Iraqi efforts in collaboration with the United Nations. The conference aimed to address the complexities of the al-Hol situation and urged countries to repatriate their citizens ahead of the camp’s final closure. This move underscores the rising global concern over the humanitarian and security challenges posed by the al-Hol camp.
