Baghdad: Al-Mustansiriya University has successfully registered a patent in dentistry for the development of a nano-mouthwash designed to treat white spots, a common issue encountered by patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment. This innovative solution has been achieved through a collaborative effort between the College of Dentistry at Al-Mustansiriya University, the Iraqi University, and Al-Karkh University of Science.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the patent was officially issued by the Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control at the Ministry of Planning. The team behind this significant advancement includes Maha Jamal Abbas and Suhad Mohammed Ali from Al-Mustansiriya University, Bassam Abdul-Razzaq from the Iraqi University, and Ghufran Sattar Jaber from Al-Karkh University of Science. Their work focuses on nano-compounds derived from black seed and pomegranate peel, utilizing laser ablation technology in liquid to enhance antibacterial efficacy, particularly against Streptococcus mutans bacteria, which is linked to tooth decay and the formation of white spots.
The research team employed three different concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15% in saline solutions to prepare these compounds. They conducted comprehensive tests to assess the characteristics and surface properties of the nanomaterials using advanced techniques such as energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results revealed a predominance of carbon, confirming the organic nature of the compounds. Furthermore, the electron microscopy images displayed distinctive pyramidal and crystalline structures, resembling pomegranate peels, with a uniform distribution of black seed particles on the surface.
This development marks a significant step forward in preventive dental care, offering enhanced protection and oral health care for orthodontic patients.
