Samarra: The Head of the /Azm/ Alliance, Muthanna Al-Samarrai, chaired a crucial meeting of the Parliamentary Committee overseeing the law designating Samarra as the capital of Iraq for Islamic Civilization. The meeting included key figures such as the two Vice-Chairmen of the committee, the head of the executive committee Badr Al-Fahl, the mayor of Samarra district, and several local officials and representatives from relevant executive bodies tasked with implementing the draft law.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meeting focused on the developments in implementing the law, which is designed to revive Samarra’s civilizational and historical significance. This will be achieved through infrastructure and service development projects as well as the rehabilitation of archaeological sites, thereby elevating Samarra’s status both locally and internationally.

During the meeting, Al-Samarrai highlighted the parliamentary committee’s efforts in advancing this important initiative. These efforts culminated in the Council of Ministers’ decision on February 11, 2025, to approve recommendations for referring infrastructure projects to reputable consulting companies, marking the preparatory phase for actual implementation.

Al-Samarrai emphasized the urgency of contracting with financially and technically proficient companies and executing projects to the highest standards, aiming for a transformative impact on the city. He noted that Samarra has the potential to be a model of integrated development, balancing historical preservation with modern infrastructure development.

He also pointed out the need to address past obstacles to the law’s implementation, particularly issues related to the city’s archaeological status. A joint agreement was reached with the General Authority for Antiquities and Heritage and UNESCO in November 2024 to address these concerns.

Al-Samarrai urged relevant authorities to maintain coordination and field oversight to ensure projects are completed within the designated timelines. He affirmed that the parliamentary committee will persist in its supervisory role to overcome any challenges, ultimately fulfilling the law’s objectives and benefiting the people of Samarra.
