Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani launched a project to rehabilitate two existing thermal units and install two new units at the al-Dora Thermal Power Plant. This initiative is aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in fuel for operating power plants.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Prime Minister’s Office announced that the project involves rehabilitating two thermal units, each with a capacity of 160 megawatts, and installing two additional units with the same capacity. This project is seen as crucial due to the plant’s strategic location in central Baghdad and its use of output from the al-Dora refinery, adhering to environmental specifications.

The Prime Minister highlighted that securing fuel and achieving energy independence has been a priority since the government took office. The Ministry of Electricity is working on resolving bottlenecks in transmission and distribution sectors to ensure a steady electricity supply. By the end of 2027, the government aims to achieve self-sufficiency in gas supply for all power plants.

Al-Sudani also mentioned the government’s commitment to renewable energy projects, including solar energy, with some expected to be operational within a year. The efforts of the Ministry of Electricity and national companies were commended for their performance under challenging conditions.

The enhancements at the al-Dora power station are expected to bolster the electrical system on Baghdad-Karkh side by integrating into the internal grid at 132 kV, thus supporting stable electricity distribution and meeting the increasing local demand. The rehabilitation of existing units will proceed according to a schedule that ensures continuous operation, utilizing fuel from the al-Dora refinery.
