Cairo: Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy condemned the Houthi escalation against Saudi Arabia, warning of its repercussions on the Kingdom’s security, regional stability, and freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Fahmy stated that the Houthi escalation has been evident in the targeting of civilian and economic facilities and infrastructure in Saudi cities, which has resulted in civilian casualties. Additionally, there has been continued targeting of commercial vessels in the Red Sea, posing threats to international maritime navigation.
The Arab League Secretary-General described these attacks as a direct assault on Saudi Arabia’s security and the safety of its citizens and residents. He affirmed the League’s complete solidarity with the Kingdom and its support in countering any threats to its security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
Fahmy highlighted that Saudi Arabia’s security is a fundamental component of the Arab national security system. He noted that the security and stability of the Gulf states are intricately linked to the security of the Arab region as a whole, emphasizing support for the measures taken by Riyadh to protect its citizens and national interests.
He cautioned that the ongoing Houthi escalation, targeting of the Kingdom, and threats to navigation in the Red Sea represent a dangerous development with consequences for the region’s security and stability. These actions violate international law, the UN Charter, and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Fahmy pointed out that the impacts of attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea extend beyond the countries bordering the shipping lane, considering the strategic importance of the Red Sea to international trade and global supply chains.
