Zurich: American Masai Russell set a new world record in the women’s 100-meter hurdles at the Zurich Diamond League athletics meet on Thursday. Russell launched a powerful attack at the final hurdle, completing the race in 12.09 seconds, breaking the previous record of 12.12 seconds set by Nigerian Tobi Amosan in 2022.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Brazilian Allyson dos Santos broke the world record in the men’s 400-meter hurdles. Dos Santos surged ahead of his rivals in the final 100 meters, covering the distance in 45.80 seconds and shattering the previous record of 45.94 seconds, set by Norway’s Karsten Warholm at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Warholm finished second in 46.69 seconds.

The 26-year-old Dos Santos has always been one of the few runners capable of breaking Warholm’s record, having won gold at the 2022 World Championships, silver in 2025, and Olympic bronze in 2021 and 2024. When the prospect of a world record being set in the women’s 800 meters that evening seemed within reach, the Brazilian sprinted forward, holding a commanding lead over Warholm near the finish. Dos Santos cemented his dominance over Warholm, having won all five of their head-to-head races.

Olympic champion Juliane Alfred of Saint Lucia set a national record of 10.70 seconds to win the women’s 100-meter race, ahead of next month’s World Athletics Championships. American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden also crossed the finish line in 10.70 seconds in a photo finish, while her compatriot Shakari Richardson took third place in 10.97 seconds.
