Baghdad: The Baghdad Environment Directorate, under the Ministry of Environment, has uncovered environmental violations at the Al-Doura and Al-Sumoud transfer stations located in the Al-Doura district. The findings, which emerged from a field inspection, revealed issues such as waste accumulation at the Al-Sumoud site and the absence of required environmental approvals for both stations.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Sadiq Al-Moussawi, Director of the Baghdad Environment Directorate, clarified that the waste build-up at the Al-Sumoud transfer station was a consequence of the malfunction of the Al-Doura model compactor. Typically, waste is directed to this station before being moved to the sanitary landfill in Al-Naba’i.

Al-Moussawi further mentioned the presence of individuals interfering with waste within the station, although no cases of waste burning were noted during the inspection. He emphasized that neither of the stations had obtained the necessary environmental approvals.

The directorate has initiated appropriate regulatory and legal actions against the stations, in line with current environmental laws and regulations. These measures aim to address the violations, manage waste operations more effectively, and mitigate their environmental impact.
