Baghdad: The Central Bank of Iraq has taken decisive action by freezing the assets of 12 significant political figures tied to ongoing corruption cases. This move is part of a larger effort to combat corruption within the country’s political landscape.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, official documents reveal that the Central Bank has instructed banks, financial institutions, and relevant authorities to place a freeze on both movable and immovable assets belonging to these individuals. This directive follows a judicial order from the investigating judge of the Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court.
The individuals affected by this freeze include former Prime Minister’s advisor Ibrahim al-Sumaidaie and current Members of Parliament such as Bahaa al-Nouri, Ziad al-Janabi, Abdul Rahman al-Khalid, Mohammed Farman al-Jubouri, Hind al-Abbasi, Bushra al-Qaisi, Mudhar al-Karawi, Muthanna al-Samarrai, Ashwaq al-Jubouri, Alia Nassif, and Mohammed Saadoun al-Sayhoud.
Banks have been instructed to promptly inform the relevant judicial authority upon identifying any assets associated with the individuals under the freeze order. This initiative underscores the Central Bank’s commitment to supporting the judicial system in the fight against corruption.
