Bogot¡: The death toll from the devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia has climbed to 329, as confirmed by the country’s National Unit for Disaster Risk Management.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the earthquake, which occurred on the morning of August 10th, centered in the Choc³ department, has also resulted in 4,600 injuries. The impact of the disaster left 257 people missing, while 364 individuals have been successfully rescued. The powerful tremors were felt not only across Colombia but also in neighboring countries.
The disaster management unit reported widespread infrastructural damage, with 171,273 homes affected across the nation. Among these, 31,183 homes were completely destroyed, and 553 multi-story buildings collapsed. Critical infrastructure suffered significant damage, including 367 health facilities, 3,710 educational facilities, 5,584 public facilities, 427 road sections, 112 water supply systems, 75 road bridges, 15 pedestrian bridges, and 5 airports.
The aftermath of the earthquake has posed considerable challenges for the Colombian government and aid organizations, as they work to provide relief and support to the affected regions.
