Diyala: The Diyala Provincial Council convened for its 31st session to tackle pertinent issues, with a primary focus on the ongoing water crisis and strategies for direct water supply to desalination facilities.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the session was led by Council Chairman Omar Al-Karwi and included the participation of 12 council members. Discussions centered around urgent solutions to alleviate the crisis’s impact and ensure water provision to citizens. The council highlighted the significance of adopting measures to prevent violations and optimize water usage for delivering drinking water to various regions.

The council explored measures for drought-stricken areas, including the drilling of wells and the establishment of desalination plants as crucial steps in addressing the drought situation.

Raad Maghamis Al-Tamimi, Chairman of the Agriculture Committee in the Diyala Council, announced the creation of committees to engage in negotiations with Iran and the Kurdistan Region concerning the province’s water scarcity. Al-Tamimi stated during a press conference that the council plans to implement measures to mitigate the water crisis, which includes forming committees to negotiate in Karmian, Kurdistan, and neighboring Iran. The aim is to increase water releases and enhance storage to meet the needs of residents and farmers.
