Fidan Confirms Indications of Potential Israeli Attack on Iran

Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has confirmed that there are indications Israel is seeking to launch an attack on Iran.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, in a televised interview with Turkish channel NTV, Fidan discussed various geopolitical issues, focusing on Iran’s economic challenges and the potential for foreign intervention. He highlighted Iran’s longstanding international sanctions, which have significantly impacted its economy and oil export capabilities. Fidan cautioned against oversimplifying the Iranian protests as solely anti-regime, emphasizing the complex socio-political landscape.

Fidan mentioned that Iran is open to reaching an understanding with the United States on the nuclear issue, although Washington has introduced additional topics into the discussions. He expressed concerns over the possibility of a new war in the region, underscoring the collective regional desire to avoid further conflict.

Addressing the situation in Syria, Fidan criticized the YPG, labeling them as an extension of an illegal structure rather than representatives of Syrian Kurds. He also noted the temporary ceasefire between the Syrian government and the SDF, suggesting that the transfer of ISIS detainees from Syria to Iraq might necessitate an extension of the ceasefire to maintain stability.

Fidan stated that the United States is actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to manage the situation, and there are ongoing consultations to de-escalate tensions. He emphasized Turkey’s preference for political solutions and dialogue, highlighting that military escalation does not contribute to Syria’s stability.

Fidan spoke about the alignment of US policy with Turkish interests, noting the involvement of US envoy Thomas Barrack in regional discussions. He described YPG leader “Mazloum Abdi” as lacking independent decision-making power, operating under the directives of the PKK leadership.

In closing remarks, Fidan called for a comprehensive political solution to ensure stability in Syria and the region, urging that the Kurds not be drawn into projects serving foreign agendas.
