Sarawak: Five people were killed when a helicopter crashed at a remote airstrip in Sarawak state on the northwest coast of Borneo, Malaysian authorities announced Wednesday. Officials from the disaster management agency reported that a Po-105 helicopter belonging to the country’s Flying Doctor Service crashed Tuesday afternoon about 315 kilometers southeast of Miri.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, all five occupants of the aircraft have died, as confirmed by reports from the Fire and Rescue Department and the Ministry of Health. Galung Luang, head of the Miri Disaster Management Committee, stated that the dead included the pilot, a doctor, a paramedic, and two nurses, as reported by local media.
Footage of the crash posted on social media showed the helicopter emitting smoke before it went down. A Malaysian aviation accident investigation team was expected to arrive at the crash site Wednesday, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia announced. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
The Flying Doctor Service in Malaysia provides assistance to indigenous communities that rely heavily on air transport due to the dense forests and rugged terrain of the country’s interior. Medical teams typically travel by helicopter or small aircraft on scheduled flights to inspect villages and traditional communal housing complexes.
