Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein Engages in Talks with League of Arab States Secretary-General on Regional Tensions


Cairo: Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein discussed the repercussions of regional tensions on Arab states with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Nabil Fahmy. A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that Hussein met with Fahmy on Monday at the League’s headquarters in Cairo, on the sidelines of the 166th regular session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level.



According to National Iraqi News Agency, at the beginning of the meeting, the Minister congratulated the Secretary-General on assuming his duties, wishing him success in his new role and hoping it would contribute to strengthening the role of the League of Arab States in confronting the challenges facing the region.



The meeting addressed ways to enhance cooperation and coordination within the framework of the League of Arab States, as well as discussing current developments in the region, the ongoing tensions between Tehran and Washington, and the implications of this escalation on the region’s security and stability.



The statement added that the meeting also addressed the potential repercussions of disruptions to maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and their impact on the economies of Arab states, particularly Iraq, given the strait’s strategic importance to global trade and energy supplies.



Fuad Hussein emphasized the importance of opening channels for dialogue and communication between the concerned parties and working to create the appropriate conditions for reaching understandings that contribute to reducing tension and preventing the conflict from escalating. He pointed to the urgent need for communication channels and a liaison to help bridge viewpoints and support diplomatic efforts.



The minister indicated the possibility of the League of Arab States playing a positive role in this context by utilizing its relationships and contacts and supporting efforts aimed at strengthening dialogue and achieving stability in the region.



For his part, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States stressed the importance of adopting quiet diplomacy and dialogue in addressing crises, expressing his openness and readiness to play a positive role that contributes to supporting efforts to reduce tension and enhance regional security and stability.
