Baghdad: Government Spokesperson Bassem al-Awadi denied reports that Iraq had forgiven its debts in exchange for signing a water agreement with Turkey.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Bassem al-Awadi addressed recent claims suggesting that Iraq had agreed to waive its debts to facilitate a water-sharing agreement with Turkey. Al-Awadi clarified that the agreement with Turkey was based on mutual interests and cooperation, and not linked to any debt forgiveness.

Al-Awadi emphasized the importance of transparent international agreements and reassured that the water pact was crucial for addressing the country’s water needs, but it did not compromise Iraq’s financial interests or resolve any outstanding debts with Turkey.
