Baghdad: The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights is actively monitoring the significant challenges faced by the Assyrian community in Baghdad. A specialized team from the High Commission for Human Rights, Baghdad Office, conducted a field visit to the Patriarchate of the Ancient Church of the East, where they engaged with Bishop Mar Yaqub and Father Shimon to discuss these pressing issues.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Qais Jabbar Qais, who oversees the Minorities File, received a detailed presentation on the community's current situation from church representatives. A major concern highlighted during the discussions was the increasing emigration of Assyrian families. This trend has been notably influenced by the aftermath of the attack on Our Lady of Salvation Church and subsequent crimes by ISIS, particularly in the Nineveh Governorate. Additionally, the community faces ongoing challenges such as encroachment on agricultural lands and cemeteries across Iraq and limited job opportunities.

The Commission's team assured that all observations made during the visit were documented and have been referred to the relevant authorities. They emphasized their commitment to supporting human rights, enhancing the rights of all groups, and promoting citizenship and equality.
